Will Flathead Lake Cherries Pull Through? The Buds are ‘Swollen’

Date:

This is the time of year for new life and new hope.

Today was a beautiful day at the beach in Somers, MT. Not a cloud in the sky, the weather in the low 60s, and not a care in the world or so it seemed. I spotted a woman walking a dog and we stopped to ‘chit-chat’.

We talked about the gorgeous weather and then how quickly it would change back into ‘winter’ again.

We talked about my topic of the week, ‘fruit’. She shared with me as she pointed across the lake that she owned a ‘cherry orchard’ and how she was very concerned and nervous that the “cherries might not make it this year as the cherry buds were ‘swollen’.

She reveald how they don’t need to have fully bloomed but that even if the bud is in the pre-bloom stage that frigid temperatures can still kill the fruit. And to those who own cherry orchards that can be tragic. She also reminded me of how two years prior the hail pummeled the cherries and ruined them.

It’s been a rough past few years when it comes to the environment and its not likely to let up anytime soon.
