Sanders County Man Unjustly Imprisoned- Awarded $5 Million after 18 Years

Date:

It’s more common than we think.

To wrongfully imprison an innocent person happens and it’s tragic. One man however holds no bitterness as he chooses to move forward with his life. That man is Richard Raugust. Read about Raugust’s amazing account below.

“According to the Montana Innocence Project, it cost state taxpayers $604,405 to keep Richard Raugust behind bars for 18 years.

Raugust is there no longer, having been released from jail in 2015 and getting homicide and other charges against him fully dismissed by the state in 2016.

Bozeman law firm Blackford Carls took up the case from there, failing to make headway with a $97 million civil suit. However, a federal civil rights lawsuit was filed in 2020 and just before the end of 2022, settlement of another legal filing against Sanders County and a deputy sheriff was reached in the amount of $5 million.”
