Most of Montana is being hit by drought it seems. This years snowfall so far (even in NW Montana is “still well below normal”). Most locals in NW Montana aren’t especially fond of the overload of tourists in the summer months but they certainly don’t want the blazes either. And this year is looking especially gloomy and eery. A lack of moisture is absolutely depressing and the fact that the liberal government won’t allow much logging to take place (in which the forest beds would be cleared out thus helping to alleviate some of the fires) is especially concerning. Whitefish Winter Carnival 2024 looked like Portland Oregon instead of the winter wonderland we remember from so much snow years back that it had to be shoveled off main street.
“As of February 5, Montana’s snowpack is meager to say the least. The Sun, Teton and Marias water basin, along the Rocky Mountain Front, is the worst with only 42% of normal snow water equivalent.
Areas like the Helena Valley, Smith, Judith, Musselshell, Gallatin, and Upper Clark Fork are slightly above half of normal. Northwest Montana, doing the best, is still well below normal.”
